Add a SHOW ONLY APPLICATIONS option in YaST's Software Management

Feature state

openSUSE Distribution
Duplicate of #310778
Status: Done

YaST's Software Management module now allows users to see mixed packages (e.g.: applications, libraries, extensions for programs, etc...), however, for new users, an option that would show
ONLY Applications (programs with GUI) would make this module's interface a lot more user-friendly.

The process of filtering could be based on searching for /usr/share/applications/*.desktop in RPM.

(Maybe additionally: extract icons, related to *.desktop files)

User benefit:

For new users, this would make YaST and software installation/remove/update a lot more friendly, since they would only have to choose the application they desire.

This could also help the user, once he feels comfortable whit this Yast's option, to, gradually, start exploring the other Yast options and even losing the fear of the package concept.

(Advanced users would retain all the control they now have).

Another advantage woud be the benefit to other Desktop Enviroments (LXDE, for example) that do not have applications such as Apper to make life easier to new users. Whit this, all DE would have an method that would be able to show them just applications without the need to add specific software for that

  • Duplicate of feature #310778:

User want to install a game.

If he knows it by name it can search it in the Search tab, (e.g.: Hedgewars) and instead of getting as result "hedgewars" and "hedgewars-data" (that may confuse the user), with this option activated, it will show only one result: "hedgewars".

If the user is just seeking a casual game, he can go to the "Package Groups"' tab, select "Games" and on the right side, every single entry is a different game that he can choose from!

No extra packages, no libs, nothing, just the application!

If i get you right what you want is an option in
YaST's Software Management module that allows it to show ONLY Applications (hidding all other packages, libraries, extensions and so on), right?

Yes, you are right.

Do you guys need a mockup for this? I could create one. Tell me what you have in mind and I can make it a picture. I have been working on a gui review for Yast for a while now.

One idea is to have a new tab (like the Search tab, for example) that allows to search and show only Applications (it could have Icons, reviews and images, but all this is secondary! For a start a filter that shows only Apps would work just fine).

Another one is to have an "Show only applications" option on the Search tab.

However this is just an idea of mine, don't really know what the M.B. had in mind. Anyway, more concepts are always welcome. :)

I just came up whit another idea that could work for all Software Manager module views:

On the Software Manager, under Options, adding the option "Show Only Applications" would hide everything else that is not an App. This would not mess anything in the interface (a new view would not be needed) and it would work for Package Groups, Patterns, Search and RPM Groups. This would also make it easier to create a mockup ;)

I purpose changing the title to "Add an APPLICATIONS view in YaST's Software Manager"

I think it will allow viewers to understand better the Feature Request. Anyone against it? (I'm asking this because it's not "my feature")

This is just idea and we are community. I think your title could be more precise.

I toke the freedom of making a few extra adjustments, then. An option to Show Only Applications under OPTIONS would work even better because it would affect all the module. ;)
