zypper progress indicator

Feature state

openSUSE Distribution

Provide an indicator using zypper up or zypper dup to let the user know how far along the process is (preferably by percentage.)

User benefit:

Makes use of zypper less intimidating to some users who feel they are at the mercy of a command that doesn't tell them how they are doing.

Especially challenging if you are in the middle of zypper updates and unsure how far along you need to do something else (even possibly come back to the machine. Knowing what percentage of the progress is completed would be useful.

I don't think we want some other type of indicator (e.g. how much time left) because there's too many variables. But a percentage should be fairly straightforward. We know how many packages are to be downloaded/installed and how many are completed so far.

There is a (#_of_installed_packages/total_#_of_packages) E.g. "Retrieving package kdebase4-session-4.6.1-54.1.i586
(183/195) , 10.0 KiB (18.0 KiB unpacked)"

in 11.4, during installation, you don't see anything in the installation part:
Retrieving package vlc-1.1.7-3.pm.16.1.x86_64 (35/36), 883.0 KiB (2.0 MiB unpacked)
Retrieving: vlc-1.1.7-3.pm.16.1.x86_64.rpm [done (218.6 KiB/s)]
Retrieving package vlc-aout-pulse-1.1.7-3.pm.16.1.x86_64 (36/36), 17.0 KiB (15.0 KiB unpacked)
Retrieving: vlc-aout-pulse-1.1.7-3.pm.16.1.x86_64.rpm [done]
Installing: libgstapp-0_10-0-32bit-0.10.32-999.pm.1000.7 [done]
Installing: libmp3lame0-3.98.4-3.pm.5.1 [done]

So yes, retrieving shows [x/y] but installation does not.

I think show [x/y] at the time installation is a good idea!
