Multitouch input layer from X.Org Server 1.11 for opensuse 12.1

Feature state

openSUSE Distribution
Done

Description

A request for the multi-touch support to be included in opensuse 11.4 via Multi-Pointer-X, due to be rolled into X.org Server 1.10 in mid February 2011.

Ubuntu are also trying to include this but are concerned, as I imagine the opensuse devs will be, by the scheduled release date being so close to distro deadlines for their spring release.

However, if it is not possible to include 1.10 would it be possible to do what Ubuntu have discussed, and back-port the entire input layer from X.Org Server 1.10 into their 1.9 build so they can have the latest
multi -touch work.

looks like X Input 2.1 multi-touch functionality is complete, but won't be merged in time to make x.server 1.10 anyway:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODc4NA

however, the developer does say:

""The xserver source code is essentially 1.9 plus a backport of the X input ABI 12 work. I believe it should be trivial to rebase the xserver patches on top of master, and I will likely do so after the merge window closes for 1.10 on Dec 1st.""

so the opportuntiy exists to have multi-touch functionality at least enabled in opensuse 11.4 and ubuntu 11.04.............

so how about opensuse devs, can we have it please? :)

this might also be very handy for Smeegol.

might also be very relevant for the opensuse ARM openfate request.

another good use for these patches is the decision to port unity to opensuse:

how about it, can we have these patches?

the fourth version of multi-touch input is ready:

If it is possible to get it included in oS 11.4 will give openSUSE a competitive advantage on this fast growing market for tablet, pad, books-like devices over other distros for a while.

In addition to GINN (the Canonical multitouch app) there is also another multitouch for Linux project by ENAC: http://lii-enac.fr/en/architecture/linux-input/multitouch-howto.html
I think the source code is available, although I can not tell from the page if it is available under any version of the GPL.

There is also the evdev change from the ENAC site of Carlos Garnacho with his blog entry here in January 2010 http://blogs.gnome.org/carlosg/2010/01/29/multi-touch-support-in-linuxxorggtk/ followed later by his June-2010 discussions for proposed improvements here: http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2010-June/009479.html and his development page here: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~carlosg/xf86-input-evdev/log/?h=multitouch-subdevs I do not have a multitouch device so I can not test nor comment on the above, other than offer as a possibility to be considered as possible an openFate investigation of this feature by someone.

the multi-touch input stuff is now scheduled for x-server 1.12, does this put it out of the timeframe available for opensuse 12.1 integration for november?

icons/user_comment.png J. B. wrote: (6 years ago)

almost certainly not as i believe that 1.11 is scheduled for august.

icons/user_comment.png J. B. wrote: (6 years ago)

having said this, phoronix was talking of adding x-input 2.1 into 1.11.............

go peter!

So we have to wait till Aug to get multi touch support in 11.4 ??

icons/user_comment.png J. B. wrote: (6 years ago)
