Kernel 2.6.37 for openSUSE 11.4

Feature state

I realise we are using a time based release, and no longer chase feature releases, but 2.6.37 will have some very interesting technologies according to phoronix:

"we can start getting excited for the
Linux 2.6.37 kernel and its exciting new features:
DisplayLink driver enhancements ,
improved desktop responsiveness ,
Broadcom's open-source driver ,
improved Radeon Evergreen DRM , and
Intel Linux DRM improvements ."

If 2.6.36 is due mid-Oct, then we can expect 2.6.37 to arrive Mid-Late January, surely this is not too late for 11.4 which is expected Late-Feb to Early-March?

Kind regards

It will be a great pitty if the 2.6.37 kernel is not included.  This is the kernel to get working on a new desktop OS!

Broadcom's open-source driver ) alone is reason enough!

I agree, thanks!!

I also agree we should ship kernel 2.6.37. Version 2.6.36 should be ready soon enough, so version 2.6.37 should be ready at least in late january, a month and a half before openSUSE 11.4 is released.

11.4-RC1 is scheduled for 2010-02-10 so depending on the actual 2.6.37 timing, there might not be much time for integration+testing which is bad for stability. And with me being one of the testers, I would like to see a stable release.

I suggest to add 2.6.37 kernel to default repository. If there's no new patch to this version of kernel and a lot of tester have installed 2.6.37, there's no choice.

One reason to don't do that is: we need to stable kernel as much as possible. Once testers instals 2.6.37 kernel, previous kernel(default) won/t been tested well.

One of the big features listed for 2.6.37 is a new broadcom driver.  I would guess it could be backported to 2.6.36 relatively easily.  So if 2.6.37 doesn't get into 11.4, I hope the broadcom driver is backported.  Especially since it is brand new, it should not cause any reversion issues.

I read a lot of openSUSE reviews and the complications involving the Broadcom driver are one of the most frequent bugbears that causes the distro to receive criticism, even though that may not be SUSE's fault. Along with other possible items that may just miss the boat such as KDE 4.6 (see the
Linux Action Show edition from 03/10/10 where they rue the apparent fallback to KDE 4.5 and missing of GNOME 3 in the upcoming openSUSE 11.4, which I'm not even sure is true) it may be worth considering the early March release date loosely and letting it slip by a week or two if necessary to get some of these important updates in. People argue this every time with every SUSE release, but on this occasion I think it could well be in the distro's best interests as there's a flurry of things that might not make it by a whisker.

kernel 2.6.36 was released on the 20th October.

if the typical three month release is maintained then 2.6.37 will be ready just in time for:

  • Thu, Jan 20 2011, openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 6 release
  • Thu, Feb 10 2011, openSUSE 11.4 RC 1 release

2.6.37 for opensuse 11.4 can happen!

I won't be angry if new OpenSUSE will be released one-two months after the deadline.

icons/user_comment.png A. J. wrote: (7 years ago)

The Kernel:HEAD project will be updated with 2.6.37 once it stabilizes as usual and we will then decide whether to go for 2.6.37 or not. Let's not discuss this further here, it will be done after discussion on the opensuse-kernel mailing list - and I bet it's 2.6.37.

Btw. we have a fixed 8 month release cycle and will not skip to wait for an update.

That's good enough. Keep stability and offer upgrades.
