Make "Desktop Selection" screen look like a dashboard

Feature state

Rejected Information

Create a dashboard install on the DVD at the installation screen to help new users better understand the install options available to them. By this I mean where the selections come up to install Gnome, KDE, etc. that a dashboard listing replace it showing the Gnome, KDE, LXDE, XCFE, JeOS, Server, and Server/Server GUI as separate icons rather than a small sublisting to select. Additionally, as the user scrolls across the icon it would give them a a summary description of the type of system it will install and possibly a screenshot or two to see if they will like it visually. Then as the install proceeds the user can customize the package selection later as is currently part of the system.

User benefit:

Users for the most part naturally take the path of least resistance so dashboard will provide both choice and GUI ease of use for the user while offering something innovative to the installer that to date Ubuntu has not implement but is possibly on the verge especially with the intro of Meerkat.

The installer already presents them with icons, not a dropdown list. http://distrowatch.com/images/cvcmxd/opensuse-11.1-installer-choose-desktop.png (URL may report 403 Forbidden, but if so, go to the URL bar and just hit enter again so the Referrer is cleared.)

You are correct on the icon listing for Gnome and KDE, but my thought is that by spreading the view and establishing it say as a two row 3 icon top/bottom option. One could have Gnome, KDE, and LXDE on top then XCFE, Server, and JeOS on bottom. As a user scrolls across the icons a screenshot of the type of install once complete might be available as well as a summary of what the installation focuses on or will install. Simply an idea for additional polish for the new user. This is similar to the layout in SUSE Studio with the various options to begin an OS build.
