Back to the old GDM 2.20 branch, the version with gdmsetup

Feature state

Rejected Information

The new GDM is ugly and miss lots of features available in previous versions, look at web
gdm web site we can see that old branch still maintained:

"A rewrite of GDM is underway. On 15 October 2007, the new design replaced the existing SVN.w/ gdm-setup) trunk

At the moment, this rewrite provides a functional login program, but is missing some features which are in the last stable (2.20) branch. It would be great if more people could get involved to help complete the rewrite.

The existing stable branch will continue to be maintained with bug fixes until the rewrite is ready. Apologies for any inconveniences this causes while we are working on this rewrite."

So, why we dont get back to old branch and wait until "rewrite" get done.

User benefit:

Because new GDM used in openSUSE 11.1 and openSUSE 11.2 lack lots of features already available in old versions of openSUSE.
Also, lots of people what to have gdm-setup back, artists want to make new gdm themes and well, new gdm just sucks and is ugly.

Please bring back the features like "gdm-setup" in the openSuSE 11.2!!!!

We, the linux users believe in the phrase: "LINUX = FREEDOM"!!!

So, it is quite obvious that we must be able to modify or customize our distros to its optimum level. Hope this things will be kept in mind when we will face the new release!

The feature list for openSUSE is already set in stone.

With GNOME 3.0 on the horizon, I don't think that any GNOME 2.x components will even be included in openSUSE 11.3.

Your freedom is to exchange gdm on your own installed system.

Yes, GNOME 3.0 is on the horizon, but as all these things are constantly developing, I hope there should be some space to move ahead with the new rewrited code. So, I expect there should be some near future update which we can just install through gnome repos! :)

Indeed I'm eagerly waiting for the release date of 11.2!

Thanks for your reply!

I also would like to see the return of gdm 2.20, at least for now. Altough I and all my colleagues use KDE (aind we are loving the job done with 4.3), gdm is the only desktop manager that can support multiterminal or multihead configurations.

One can point ou that it can be done with just Xorg also, but that is absolutelly not so simple, at the same that it cannot use both video-outputs from a single card: so you can only get one output from each card, which in turns kills the feature.

With gdm 2.20, and not in the newer ones, it can be done. They removed this option on the hope that someday hal or policykit or whatever would fill in the gap, but as fat as I know, they are already goind to version 3.0 of gdm, and there is still no improvement on support for this feature from those projects.

In the future, development projects like mdm (http://wiki.c3sl.ufpr.br/multiseat/index.php/Mdm ) or vga arbiter (http://wiki.c3sl.ufpr.br/multiseat/index.php/VGA_Arbiter_Solution) or xat (http://wiki.c3sl.ufpr.br/multiseat/index.php/Xat) or another will overcome the usage of gdm 2.20 and Xephyr (btw, THANKS for updating that for 11.2!), as well as we can expect that the flexibility of gdm will someday return for other uses, but for the time being, there is *NO* real alternative for it. ;)

PLEASE, vote for this one! Maybe it's too late for it be in 11.2, but there is still plenty of time for 11.3! ;)
