Provide config GUI for snd hda intel model selection

Feature state

openSUSE-11.2
Rejected Information

Description

The intel HDA sound module is not always able to automatically detect the correct model of the sound card. This SDB page describes a long winded way to tell the module which model to use:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Intel-HDA_sound_problems
It even requires installation of kernel-source just to get the docu file.

The problem seems to be quite common on Laptops so yast should just offer a GUI option in the sound module to select the model. This probably requires a machine parsable file provided by alsa that can be read by yast.

You can already set the model using the expert config during initial config or use [Edit] button for a configured card.

The problem is that yast curently doesn't have any predefined list of model names, they should be part of the sound card database. You have to know what to enter there.

Ludwig, is a predefined list of models sufficient to fulfill this feature?

I guess automatic model detection is not possible, Takashi?

Yes, the ability to select a model is what I'm asking for.

Right now one can edit the module parameter via yast (if one knows that one needs to do that) but there is no hint whatsoever what to enter.

The automatic detection isn't possible as now. We need a database. And, having a database means that the database must be updated at each time the kernel is updated.

Alternatively, checking /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt might work (but unreliably). But, the list depends on the codec chip which isn't exposed to PCI space. Thus, you don't know it unless you load the driver. So, it's a chicken-and-egg problem.

I find a GUI for such would be nice, but technically it's not so trival as it sounds.

So, we have to reject this.

Takashi, could you comment on this, please?
